Brief History of Cosmetics
From the beginning of time, people have always adorned themselves with makeup to standout from everybody else. Whether it was clay, berries, or charcoal the reason was the same. Therefore, people used makeup to show individuality and standout from the crowd. As civilization advance, so did the types and mediums used for makeup.
Did you know that makeup dates back to 6000 BCE with the Egyptians. It probable dates back much further; but the Egyptians were the first to record the use of makeup in their paintings.
By 4000 BCE, the Greek and Romans began to wear makeup. The Greek and Romans went with the “natural” look and used light touches of color on their cheeks and lips. Therefore, they would mix plants and fruits with dyes and mercury. Nonetheless, a toxic brew to say the least.
Chinese showed up on the scene around 3000 BCE with nail polish and light-colored foundations. As always, the use of makeup was to show their social status. Thus, the pigments were quite important. The pigments used came from boiling plants, animal fats, an spices.
The 1500 CE showed a dramatic change in makeup. The concepts of beauty changed and the Elizabethan look took hold. The whiting of the skin was accomplished using vinegar and white lead. Cheeks color was achieved using egg whites, ochres and mercury. Therefore, makeup was a toxic brew. It is important to note that life expectancy went down to around 29 years.
Queen Victoria created her own anti-makeup Trend. She thought that makeup was unladylike and vulgar. Thus, life expectancy increased.
In the 1920’s, Hollywood encouraged women to wear makeup. The makeup industries flourished and we have makeup being worn and sold to the masses. Thus, we come to our modern day concept of makeup.
Is Wearing Makeup Healthy
Many of the Makeup that we use have harsh Chemicals. Those Chemicals compromise the function of your skin, allowing pathogens to enter your skin. If you use makeup, you need to take special care of your skin and follow the following tips:
- Buy the Right Product. Cosmetic companies use various chemicals to produce their products. Some of these chemicals can be harmful to your skin type. You need to know your skin type and purchase products accordingly. Be sure to read the label for chemicals that can cause an allergic reaction.
- Moisturize. Moisturizing helps maintain the protective properties of your skin. Some chemicals in cosmetics can dehydrate your skin. Therefore, you have to always use moisturizers to maintain your skin health.
- Apply Sunscreen. The sun causes early aging of the skin. Apply sunscreen before you apply makeup; or use makeups that provides sun protection.
- Clean the Makeup Brushes. Clean your brushes at least once a week. Bacteria thrive on makeup brushes. Thus, cleaning your brushes is essential to good health.
- Remove Makeup Before Bed. Makeup has to be removed before you go to bed to allow your skin to breath. In addition, make sure you use a moisturizer after you remove your makeup.
- Never Share your Makeup. Sharing makeup is a good way of spreading bacteria and should be avoided.
Using makeup is safe as long as you follow the rules to take are of your skin. You need to remember that you have only the skin that you are born with. There are no Do-overs in life and any damage that you do to your skin can not be easily repaired.
Experimenting with the Goth Appearance
I have always be conservative with my appearance and the type of makeup that I used. A new friend of mine, Lisa, was into the Goth appearance. I have never been around anyone that was into the Goth appearance and I was intrigued. Not for an every day thing; but, special occasion. I asked her how she go her look and she gave me the following routine that she follows.
Step 1: Prime your Face. Prime your Face to ensure that the makeup look will last. The Face Primer will transform your face into a smooth canvas that is ready for applying makeup. Blend the Face Primer evenly over the face and allow to dry. Make sure that the Face Primer is Hydrating since it will cover the pores. In addition, I make sure that it is 100% vegan.
Step 2: Apply Foundation. Apply a makeup foundation to create an even base (foundation) for the rest of your makeup. The right formula can help cover blemishes, blur imperfections, and create a smooth even canvas. Always make sure that it is 100% vegan.
Step 3: Create a Goth Glow. Apply a Bronzer to the hollows of your cheeks, temples and jawline to add definition. Use a fan brush to apply Highlighting Powder to your cheekbones, the tip of your nose, and your cupid’s bow. Finish up your cheeks with a neutral blush shade.
Step 4: Create Smokey Eyes. Dark smokey eyes is what brings any Goth makeup come to life. The look uses a wintery mix of Black, Blue, and Silver Hues to get a softer Goth eyeshadow. Take time layering the Hues and slowly build them up until you have the desired look.
Start with applying a dark gray shadow on your lid for the Base. Use your brush to blend the color into the creases to get rid of any harsh lines.
Use a flat eyeshadow brush to apply a blue shade and gradually build up the color a little at a time. When you have reached the desired level of darkness, use your blending brush to buff the color into the creases.
Finish your eyeshadow by applying a small amount of Silver or White Glitter eyeshadow and use it to line the inside corners and the lower lash line. You can overdo the Glitter. Smart with a small amount and add more as needed.
Step 5: Line your Eyes. You need to apply Black Eyeliner to finish your Goth eyes. Take a felt tip eyeliner and draw along our upper lash line. Then, draw along your lower lash line. Make sure that you avoid the inner corner of your eye. Keep the eyeliner confined to the outer three quarters of your eye lash.
Step 6: Boost your Lashes. You have two options. You can use Mascara, or false eyelashes.
Washable Volumizing Mascara: Instantly create bold clean volume with this buildable formula that volumizes, lifts, lengthens and separates lashes creating up to 7x fuller lashes; Flake, clump and smudge resistant
False eyelashes amplify eyes like nothing else. A good pair of false eyelashes is easy to apply and manipulate, should you need to fit your eye. Once there, the best false eyelashes stay put until it’s time to take them off.
Step 7: Define your Brows.
This eye makeup look calls for a clean-cut eyebrow shape. Fill in your arches using a waterproof eyebrow mechanical pencil. Then to make your eyebrows stand out, highlight the underside with a light swipe of Highlighting powder.
Step 8:Add a Dark Lipstick. Finish off your Goth makeup with a dark lip color. Stick to the basic black or dark purple.
Sometimes its the effects of colors that makes our lives so much more full. As a matter of fact it is an amazing fun way to express yourself. With this in mind, the supernatural and unique flare allows you to set a tone of uniqueness.
